Sharpening his attack on the Modi government over the impending Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday said the right to vote forms the basis of democracy and the DMK government would protect it by defeating the attempts to snatch that away disenfranchise the electorate.
“Everyone is aware of what has happened in Bihar in the guise of SIR, where lakhs of voters were removed from the electoral rolls. The BJP is trying to replicate the same in Tamil Nadu as well. Realising this conspiracy, we are fighting against it right from the beginning. Now, neighbouring Kerala too has joined the fight against this exercise,” he said, speaking at an official event in Tenkasi, where he launched and inaugurated developmental projects in that newly carved district abutting the Western Ghats.

In order to make the fight inclusive and a united one, Stalin said the DMK had convened an all-party meeting on November two to decide on the next course of action to stall the SIR. “Invites have been sent to all parties to attend the meeting cutting across political divides and to safeguard democracy and protect the voting rights of the people of Tamil Nadu.
He also charged the Union Government of not releasing the Calamity Relief Fund to the tune of Rs 37,000 crore to the state so that damaged infrastructure could be restored. “It has not been released so far. Why? Because it was released Tamil Nadu will become more developed. But, the Centre doesn’t want that to happen. Whether it is natural calamity or artificial political conspiracy, our duty and responsibility is to protect the people,” he said.
